GAS STRUTS are springs commonly used in the machines, furniture, cars, office equipments, automation equipments and others. When the rod is compressed into the cylinder, it extends out when the compressive force is removed or reduced. A gas spring is filled with pure Nitrogen, which is an inert gas.

Actual spring force at 5mm from each end of the stroke

F1 = Extension force when Piston Rod extended

F2 = Extension force when Piston Rod retracted

F3 = Compression force when Piston Rod extended

F4 = Compression force when Piston Rod retracted

FR = Friction force = F3 - F1, F4 - F2

Spring rate X= F2 / F1

The value F1 is measured at 20°C ± 2°C when the Piston rod swings downward

How to Select a Gas Struts

Obtain the Extension Force F1 (N) at 20° C

F1 =

W x A

x 13

B x n

W = weight of the door etc in kg

A  = horizontal distance between the fulcrum and the center of weight

B = distance between the fulcrum and the gas spring's fixed point

n  = number of gas spring used, usually n = 2 units

13 = conversion factor for Kg to N, plus the safety factor of 1.3

Example:

W = 10kg, A = 300mm, B = 200mm

F1 =

10 x 300

x 13 = 97.5N

200 x 2

When mounting or storing, the piston rod of the gas struts must point downwards.

Make allowance for play in the joints, if there are vibration the fittings need to be tightened against loosening.

Avoid tilting or twisting of piston rod.

Avoid lateral forces.

Protect the piston rod from dirt, paint or damage.

Do not perform metal cutting on the gas spring.

Use the gas spring only within the temperature range of -20° - 80°C

Force tolerance +40N / -20N or ±5% of the nominal force, the actual force varies with the change of temperature, about ±3% for each 10°C change.
